Indexes and Bruises
The series Indexes and Bruises takes from a childhood memory of being photographed by child protective services and reflects on that experience as a trauma whose memory became an index itself. The work illustrates domestic violence and the state social systems as experienced by a child. The photographs and their accompanying text pieces focus on the objectification on the body, the systems that participate in this and the effects on memory and identity. The images themselves are ambiguous and investigate the form and appearance of the index, looking both microscopic and galactic, grotesque and ethereal. Abstracted polaroids of bruised body parts and fruit are presented together as an analogy for family, physicality, objectification and delicacy. The title relates not only to the indexes that are the physical bruises, but those of the memories, those created by the state institutions and the photograph itself as an index.
